Northeastern Oklahoma kicked off to start the 1993 Mineral Water Bowl, 7 seconds later Larry Bowie scored their first touchdown. The Norsemen were unstoppable in the first half, scoring touchdowns on each of their first five possessions. Even when Butler County did something spectacular the Norsemen topped it. Down 28-7 late in the second quarter, the Grizzlies Jermaine Williams sliced through right tackle for a 65 yard scoring run. But before the Butler County fans had stopped cheering, NEO's Brandon Willis took the ensuing kickoff back 92 yards to trump it. The halftime score was 35-14. When Bowie scored again with five minutes left in the third quarter to give NEO a 42-17 lead a few of the fans headed home. They missed a spectacular finish. Quarterback Brad Woodard with receivers Jimmy Dean and Jared Grose brought the Grizzlies back. They scored three quick touchdowns while the Norsemen could manage only a field goal. They were eight points down with eight minutes left when Dean returned a punt 75 yards for another score. They could have tied it with the two point conversion, but the Norsemen broke up Woodard's pass. NEO led 45-43 and needed to answer with a time consuming drive. They did, chewing up three minutes behind the running of Bowie and Jerome Burroughs. Garrick McGee hit Brandon Rader on an 18 yard scoring pass with only 1:44 remaining. That was plenty of time for BC. It took them 57 seconds to go 59 yards as Grose scored his third TD of the half. It was 52-50 with 47 seconds left, still plenty of time. Larry Bowie had scored three touchdowns and set a bowl rushing record but he may have made his most important play of the day when he recovered the ensuing Butler County onside kick. After fourteen touchdowns and a 26 point fourth quarter rally, he had finally secured victory for the Golden Norsemen. |
