In the
first ten minutes of the 1995 Mineral Water Bowl Middle Georgia
fumbled away three of their first six snaps then watched as Hutchinson
quarterback, P.J. Peters threw three touchdown passes that put
the Warriors in a 20-0 hole.
While
they still had trouble containing Peters, who threw for a bowl
record 396 yards, and running back Dion Marion, the Warrior defense
steadied in the second quarter. Quarterback Chason Carroll threw
scoring passes to Rivington Kendrick and Dave Ferguson that made
the halftme score 27-14.
Middle
Georgias huge offensive line began to gain control in the
third quarter. The Warriors had 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns,
while Hutchinson could manage only a field goal. When Carroll
and Ferguson connected for a 40 yard strike late in the quarter
the Blue Dragons lead was only two, 30-28.
The lead
was still two after the teams traded fourth quarter touchdowns.
With five minutes remaining, it appeared Middle Georgia had thrown
away their last chance when they fumbled again, committing their
sixth turnover of the game.
But a
fourth and one gamble by Hutchinson gave them another chance.
With 3:38 remaining and the ball on the Middle Georgia 44, linebacker
Henry Robbins stopped fullback Darin Brunk for no gain and set
up the offense for its final drive.
They controlled
the clock as well as the tiring Blue Dragon defense. With Kendrick
running almost exclusively behind the left side of the line they
drove steadily toward the winning score. It came with eleven
seconds left as Carroll snuck it in. Middle Georgia had its first
lead of the day and the Mineral Water Bowl championship.
